Xcalak
Trip Description

Ed Blank's
ADVENTURES on the Fly
offers Tierra Maya as the base of your fly fishing adventure to Xcalak. The fly fishing near the village Xcalak is not exactly a secret anymore but the the pressure is still extremely low.  It is rare that you see another boat while you are out for the day.

The trips begin with your arrival at the airport in Cancun. Depending on your travel plans we will meet you at the airport and head south along the Caribbean coast on Highway 307.  Perhaps we will stop to get some lunch or dinner along the way in Playa Del Carmen. Remember, the last place to buy anything or pick up extra cash is in Playa Del Carmen, a cute seaside town or Carillo Puerto. Many people enjoy these towns enough to spend a day or two there on the next trip.

After an hour and a half on 307 we pass The famous Tulum Archeological site and continue inland a bit to the town of Carillo Puerto.  Altogether it is about a 4 1/2 hour drive on good roads to get to Xcalak.  Highway 307 is very fast and the old road to Xcalak is now paved and is very nice.

Another hour finds us passing a military check point and they may or may not search our van, in general they are looking for weapons or drugs - so don't bring any of either!! Finally the paved road ends as we near the town and the lodge is just a few miles away. I am sure you will be ready for a cervesa!

Your rooms are modern clean and comfortable and the owners are on site and you will enjoy their hospitality.  All the rooms face the ocean  with doors that open to allow the sea breeze to flow into your room and into your hearts ( Sounds like a Yoga commercial) Anyway back to the hotel.   There is a central dining and bar that will be the center of your activities over the next few days.

a flat near the lodgeAfter a good nights sleep the fisherman will meet right after breakfast at the dining room and head out for a day of bone fishing or permit fishing - even a grand slam is possible every day of the year.  You are actually just a few miles from Belize! There are flats just a few minutes from the lodge and some of the most spectacular flats of Chetumal Bay are just 20 minutes away by boat.  The Bay is larger than Ascension Bay with extremely diverse terrain. Some flat are hard white sand other can be grassy or some can be mucky.  The shoreline is mostly mangroves with the occasional deserted beach. Wading allows both anglers in the boat to fish and gets us closer to the fish.  The flies we use tend to be lighter versions of the typical bonefish flies. These fish hang out in very thin water so sometimes no weight at all is best.  Brown or pink seen to be the hot colors with tan and white a close second!

The boats are locally made Pangas and are poled with the traditional hand carved wood pole.  The guide will spot fish way before they are in casting range. ( The guides make fun of our polling platforms!)
