For Women

Lisa Berger with a nice rainbow trout caught on a women's flyfishing adventureHi, I'm Lisa Berger, and as Ed's partner in these adventures, I make sure that it is a rewarding trip for the women who decide to come along.  Contrary to what you might hear, the wilds of Alaska are a place for women!  There is nothing more fulfilling than living outdoors in this vast wilderness, learning to cast a fly while taking in the beauty of Alaska. Ed and I take the time to enjoy all that this area has to offer. Last year about 20% of the guests were women and its growing each year. If you're "just" a novice flyfisher, I promise you'll catch more fish than you'll ever expect! This is an adventure that will test your limits and change you forever! The most common questions I am asked from other women about the trip are: What about bears? Is the camping rugged? How are the bugs? Do we get showers? How is the weather?

The bears are magnificent animals and we will most likely see some on each trip. Nothing I say can prepare you for the rush of adrenaline you'll get when you see one in the wild. We take care to make sure we don't interfere with them by camping in "bear free" areas and wearing "bear bells" wherever we go. As long as they can hear you, they will avoid you. The bears are much more interested in salmon than humans. Nonetheless, we have mace for anyone who feels they would like to carry it. We do not carry firearms as having a loaded gun in camp is far more likely to result in an accident than preventing one.

Linda and a nice rainbow trout from the Moraine women in AlaskaCamping: It's luxury camping with two people to a four person tent. There's plenty of room to stand up inside and we use cots for added comfort. As for the food, Ed is a fabulous cook! No kidding, check out the menu. I can't even make toast! You'll be wined and dined as if you were home and all of this off a 3 burner Coleman stove. We can accommodate most dietary needs - just ask!

Bugs: The bugs can range from none to swarms, it all depends on the wind. Just a bit of a breeze and they are gone! There are more bugs in the beginning of the summer than at the end of the summer. We have a screened kitchen and dining tent that so we can eat in peace if does get calm. Also, plan to bring your own head net just in case. (See the recommended gear list) You'll have to expect that a few get in the dining tent and join in on our morning coffee.

Laurie with a big bow while dry fly fishing in AlaskaShowers: Well, no showers, I carry a solar water shower that can make some hot water for a quick excuse for a shower. I'm lucky if I get one of these "showers" a week. Don't worry, we're all in this together, everyone smells the same! The end of the trip usually finds us in King Salmon at a local lodge to get a shower before you have to get on a plane full of clean people!

Weather: The weather can be gorgeous or it can rain like the dickens. Most trips have more rain than sun, but if you are equipped with the proper rain gear you will remain comfortable. The days usually get up to 65 to 70 and the nights cool off to about 50. On a clear night at the end of August rainbow fly fishing alaskait could actually frost but its pretty unusual. A clear cold night u usually means the following day will be clear, sunny and 75 degrees. The other thing that takes getting used to is the long days and short nights. You just don't realize how late it is!

Believe me if I love this trip so will you. I am far from a mountain woman, in fact, I have a public speaking career that keeps me in nylons and makeup in the winter months. We can have a women's only group (I advise we keep Ed along though, since he's the one who can cook!) or we can fit you in with another group or couple - (yes, your mate can come along to!) Most women end up out fishing their male partners while up here. We're just better equipped to fly fish, it takes finesse, patience and a willingness to enjoy the entire experience! Please feel free to call me directly at (617) 445-1647 so I can answer more of your questions.
