EL PESCADOR - PUNTA GORDA
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

relax on the deck or flyfish the flats of BelizeWhere do we fly to? You fly to Belize City, Belize.  It is serviced out of Miami and Houston by Continental and American Airlines.  The trip prices will include the flight from Belize City to the lodge.

Do I need a passport? Yes, no visa is needed in advance, but you do need a passport.

What language to they speak in Belize? This is the former British Honduras and everyone speaks English as well as Spanish, Creole or Garufina.

Is the food  and water safe? When asked this question I am speaking about El Pescador, not the rest of Belize.  If you travel to other parts of Belize the answer is quite different. The Manager ( Jim Scott) is an American with a great deal of experience in the hotel business.  His staff uses American  standards to  insure that your food and water is bought, stored, prepared and served with food safety in mind.  If you go to the town of Punta Gorda you always need to drink bottled water and be concerned about the food you select.

What about money in Belize? One US dollar is worth 2 Belizean dollars . All stores accept US dollars or Belizean dollars.   The prices everywhere on the island will be in Belizean dollars. Credit cards can be accepted at a 2.07 Belizean to American rate.

How is the Fishing? I like this part of Belize because it has a good mix of fish and nobody is fishing it.  There are not as many bonefish as on Turneffe or Ambergris, but having  good tarpon fishing year round, and the best permit fishing in the world more than makes up for it.  The diversity of the types of water you fish is quite interesting as well. Rivers, landlocked lakes, creeks, flats, lagoons are all a part of our fishery .  A good bonefish day with an experienced flyfisher is 15 fish. A poor day that same person can expect 3 fish.   It also depends on the type of fishing you do.  I like stalking individual fish in very shallow water so a daily total for me might only be 7 fish.  In other situations the guide may stake you off near a school of a thousand fish where you may catch 10 in an hour, but it is virtually blind casting into a mud of fish.  Tarpon landings are few and far between.  That's why the term "jumped a fish" i s used.  Hook them, watch them jump 5 feet in the air,  and throw the hook. Permit are just as bad with an average day getting 10 good shots but maybe one hookup in 20 shots!  Not fast fishing but it is really the best in the world year round!

Will my non-fishing family like it here? .  The rooms are great and the facilities are wonderful, there is a pool but remember the resort is not right on the beach.  Although we have quite a bit of activities for non fishers here,  there is not as many options as there are on Ambergris Caye.   If they like warm weather and a resort that will pamper them, they will love it here. It is hard to believe they are all happy and you can fish like a madman!

Are there any unexpected charges? The price for the trip includes the air and water transfers from Belize city to the resort, all taxes, fishing license, lodging, 3 meals a day, and even gratuities for the staff.   The only other charges not included are: a $15 departure tax at Belize City when you leave the country, a tip for your fishing guide ($25/day/boat) and the bar tab.  This one can add up so be careful!! Since you are relatively remote it costs a great deal to ship the food and beverages here.  So a beer is $3.50, a mixed drink is up to $6 and even a coke is $3.  There is plenty of water and punch included with the package.   At the end of the trip when you check out you will settle your bar tab and pay for any extra excursions you or your family booked. In the mean time everything is charged to your room

What shots do I need? The CDC recommends lots of vaccines for Belize because they are speaking about the entire country.  Some areas have no sanitation at all and no waste disposal at all. You will be at risk in those areas. Most all of the diseases on the CDC list such as Typhoid are completely eliminated by normal sanitation and waste treatment. Hepatitis A has never been reported at Journeys End.  Therefore the only legitimate risk on their list for visiting El Pescador is slight chance of Malaria which is carried by certain mosquitoes.  Since we do have   mosquitoes it is possible that Malaria could be contracted while visiting here.  The risk is indeed small but it is there.  Please consult you doctor about  anti malaria pills if you have any concerns.
