Frequently Asked Questions

chtrout_and_reel.jpg (10094 bytes)Where does the trip start? All of the trips to Chile will start in Puerto Montt where you will be met by our staff.

How much does it cost to get to Puerto Montt? My last ticket from Boston to Puerto Montt was $1255.  Many airlines fly from the US to Santiago Chile, and then you will have to connect to a Lan Chile flight to Puerto Montt.

Will my non-fishing mate enjoy Chile? If you go to Yan Kee Way the answer will be yes!  The activity list is endless, the staff is attentive and the facility is world class. ( which is almost impossible to find in Chile, especially Patagonia)  There only a few places on earth that you can experience the awesome beauty that exists here. Combine that with sport adventures, wine tastings, casinos, salsa (Latin dance)  lessons, hot tubs  and great food you can't miss.  This is one of the few adventures we recommend for couples when one fishes and the other doesn't.  About 60 % of our guests at Yan Kee Way  come here just for a vacation in Patagonia without fishing.  At El Patagon or Los Banditos it is 90% fishing enthusiasts. ( the exception is our kayaking program at El Patagon)

Do the guides speak English? Yes, all our guides speak English . Most speak Spanish as well and there are several American guides on staff.

Do you have access to private water? The lodge owns 3,200 acres and has private water on several rivers, streams and lakes.  We also have leased access to key areas on Public water so that we can launch our boats and float through areas with out other access.

How many and how big are the fish  you catch?  For and expert, a great day is fifty trout and a bad day is 5. Most of the variable is due to weather patterns.  If you are an intermediate fisherman you should average 10-15 nice fish a day.  If you can bang the banks between trees and snags quickly you will be rewarded often. The mix is about 30% rainbows and 70% browns. It is true that Patagonia has some huge trout, but not everyone who visits will be lucky and skilled enough to land one.  You will have shots at 5-20 pound fish   quite often. With a week of fishing most people te nd to land their personal best brown.  My last trip was plagued by high water. Our best trout was 8 pounds, and several salmon about 10 pounds.  We worked hard for that big fish.

Do you need a visa for Chile? All you need to bring is your passport.  We will take care of all other documentation, even your fishing licensee.

What unexpected charges are we likely to find? When you enter Chile you will have to pay a $45 entry fee.  I still can't figure out why but you do. Once at the Puerto Montt airport your package covers everything even fishing licenses. The last place to spend money is the tip for your guides and wait staff. I would say a range of $25-$75 per day tip for the fishing guide and about $10 per day for the staff is right.

Are there bugs? Not many.   If you get a dead calm day on a spring creek there may be a few no see um type critters.  There are horseflys that are common in January. Bring some bug spray just to be safe.

What is the weather like? Well in the beginning of the season and the end it can be quite chilly with lows getting down to the 40's and high from 55-75.  Mid summer it is 65-80 during the day and 50-70 degrees at night.  The fall will start back down to more spring like weather.  Statistically it may rain about 33 percent of the time  in the summer with more in the spring and fall. I have seen weeks of rain and weeks of sun so be prepared for both.
