GOLFITO SAILFISH RANCHO - Frequently Asked Questions

bbparrot.jpg (23109 bytes)Where do we fly to? You fly to San Jose, Costa Rica..  It is serviced by many Us airlines.  The trip prices will include the transportation from San Jose to the lodges.  Bi-Coastal trips also include all the transfers from San Jose to the Caribbean, over to the Pacific side and then Back to San Jose

Do I need a passport? Yes, no visa is needed in advance, but you do need a passport.

What language to they speak in Costa Rica? Spanish is the official language and 75% of the people along the tourist trail will speak English fairly well.  Our  guides and hosts are all fluent in English as well as Spanish

Is the food  and water safe? We drink well water at the lodges and it is considered extremely safe.  If you travel to other parts of Costa Rica the answer is quite different. .  The water is safe to drink out of your tap on either coast.  The lodges are both owned by Americans and are run by American Standards.  These American standards insure that your food is bought, stored, prepared and served with food safety in mind.  Elsewhere on your vacation in Costa Rica we advise you to be extremely careful and you always need to drink bottled water and be concerned about the food you select.

What about money in Costa Rica? One US dollar is worth about 300 colones . All stores accept US dollars or Costa Rican Colones.   The prices everywhere  will be in Colones.

bbtarponinhand.jpg (14194 bytes)How is the Fishing? The fishing is the best tarpon fishing in the world on the east coast and the best billfishing in the world on the west coast.   This still means hours of absolutely no action  followed by all hell breaking loose.  Tarpon landings are few and far between. Billfish landings are few and far between.  That's why the term "jumped a fish" is used.  Hook them, watch them jump 5 feet in the air,  and throw the hook.

Will my non-fishing family like it here? The East:Only if they expect and adventure and can see themselves fishing, taking jungle tours, watching monkeys, or spotting Crocs.  There is the best eco-jungle-turtle tourism in the world but there is no a/c, no TV, no pool, no nightlife. The howler monkeys will wake you at 5 am!!
The West: This is a resort with a few more amenities you would expect with a small pool and more people to hang out with.  Not quite as remote as the Caribbean side but still not the city by a long shot. Non fishing members of your group are not allowed on the fishing boats.

bbchicocourtney.jpg (15702 bytes)Are there any unexpected charges? The prices for the trips includes the ground or air or water transfers from San Jose to the lodges, all taxes,  lodging, 3 meals a day, guided fishing or jungle tours each day.   The only other charges not included are: a $30 fishing license, a $17 departure tax at San Jose when you leave the country, a tip for your fishing guide ($15/day/person or so) and waitstaff ( $8/day/person or so).  The bar tab is included on the west coast trips but not on the east coast trips.    There is plenty of water,  punch and iced tea included with the package.   At the end of the trip when you check out you will settle your  tab and pay for any extra excursions or tours you or your family booked. In the mean time everything is charged to your room

What shots do I need? The CDC recommends lots of vaccines for Costa Rica because they are speaking about the entire country.  Some areas have little sanitation at all and poor waste disposal . You will be at risk in those areas. Most all of the diseases on the CDC list such as Typhoid are completely eliminated by normal sanitation and waste treatment. Hepatitis A has never been reported at our resorts but do always consult your doctor first and foremost..  Malaria   is carried by certain mosquitoes.  Since we do have some mosquitoes it is possible that Malaria could be contracted while visiting us.  The risk is indeed small but there.  Please consult you doctor about  anti malaria pills if you have any concerns.

What about electricity? They have standard US voltage and outlets.  No adapters are needed.
